There is no doubt about it – we live in very stressful and uncertain times. These days the notion of a ‘job for life’ doesn’t exist anymore and living with the worry that your job is safe and secure takes its toll. In our current economic climate there are many who have been made redundant, perhaps for the first time in their career, and dealing with the issues of confidence and self-esteem this brings can be difficult to manage on your own. For those in work the pressures are different, but no less real and challenging.
If we use our family, friends and work colleagues to support us, we can often get things into perspective and cope more easily. However, sometimes this is not enough or not appropriate. The counselling process can be dynamic and solution focused, or it can provide an individual with insight and understanding, enabling them to reflect on what is the best way to deal with their individual situation. It may not be for everyone, but for many it provides an opportunity to manage stress and pressure. It is confidential and professional.

At one time the word ‘coaching’ conjured up an image of sportsmen and women being supported, guided and encouraged to fine tune skills and competencies in their own particular field of endeavour. It was seen as a powerful tool; enabling individuals to improve their performance, increase their motivation and overcome any obstacles that might impact on their progress and development. More recently, coaching individuals at work has become accepted as a way forward to help individuals understand what they need to do to improve their work-based skills and competencies.
Training individuals and groups in new techniques, processes, innovations and raising awareness of issues will always have a part to play in the development of staff. However, coaching techniques are becoming more popular as a way of targeting specific issues and problems. Coaching is specific to individuals and as such can pinpoint what is the most effective way of moving that individual forward.
